Republicans wasted no time demanding President Joe Biden’s resignation and immediately went after his likely successor, Vice President Kamala Harris, following Biden’s historic announcement to bow out of the 2024 race.
House Speaker Mike Johnson led the charge, declaring, “If Joe Biden isn’t fit to run for President, he’s not fit to serve. He must resign immediately.” His statement on X set off a flurry of similar calls from top Republicans.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, the No. 3 Republican in the House, echoed Johnson’s sentiments on Truth Social, asserting, “If Biden can’t handle a re-election campaign, he’s unfit for the presidency and must step down immediately.” The sentiment was widely shared among GOP leaders who have long questioned Biden’s mental fitness.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise didn’t hold back either, blasting Democrats for what he called their sudden realization about Biden’s mental state. “For years, anyone questioning Biden’s fitness was labeled a conspiracy theorist. Now Democrats admit what we’ve seen all along,” he posted.
Senators Bill Cassidy and John Cornyn chimed in, with Cassidy calling Biden’s decision “overdue” and Cornyn insisting that Biden should step down if he isn’t competent enough to run for re-election. Sen. J.D. Vance, Trump’s vice presidential pick, added fuel to the fire by stating, “Not running for re-election is Biden’s admission that Trump was right about his mental unfitness.”
Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, took it a step further by accusing the Democratic Party of trying to undermine the will of the voters. “The Democrats are upending the expressed will of the American people just over 100 days before the election,” he warned on X. Johnson also criticized the timing, saying, “Forcing Biden off the ballot this close to the election is a desperate move.”
As the GOP piled on Biden, they also set their sights on Kamala Harris. Donald Trump Jr. didn’t waste any time in targeting Harris, stating, “Kamala Harris owns Biden’s leftwing policy disasters. She was in charge of the border, and it led to the worst illegal invasion in our history!”
In the midst of this political upheaval, the calls for Biden’s resignation grew louder, and Harris found herself at the center of a conservative storm. The stage is set for an intense and contentious battle as the 2024 election approaches, with both sides gearing up for a showdown.
