Tim Walz might seem like the friendly, Midwestern dad next door, but his stance on transgender medical interventions for children is far from protective. In fact, he’s championing the cause. Just this week, Vice President Kamala Harris selected Walz as her running mate, leading to increased scrutiny of his progressive policies on immigration, abortion, and particularly gender ideology.
In April 2023, Walz signed several controversial bills that positioned Minnesota as a sanctuary for minors seeking puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or transgender surgeries. One particularly alarming law permits the state to take custody of children if their parents refuse to provide “gender-affirming care.” The legislation states, “A court of this state has temporary emergency jurisdiction if the child is present in this state and … the child has been unable to obtain gender-affirming health care.” Additionally, the law mandates that Minnesota will not cooperate with other states attempting to remove a child from parents who subject them to hormone treatments or surgeries.
Walz also signed a bill banning “conversion therapy,” a term that critics argue unfairly targets therapists who try to help children accept their biological sex instead of pushing them towards irreversible medical treatments. “We’re also protecting young and vulnerable Minnesotans from the harmful and discredited practice of conversion therapy. We’re putting up a firewall to ensure Minnesotans have the freedom to make their own health care decisions,” Walz proudly declared at the time.

In March 2023, ahead of the legislative actions, Walz issued an executive order affirming the legality of transgender medical interventions for minors. At the signing ceremony, Walz was seen holding hands with a 12-year-old boy dressed as a girl, alongside a six-year-old boy, also in a dress, accompanied by parents raising him as a girl. When asked by a reporter why they were present, the six-year-old responded, “For trans rights.” Walz enthusiastically added, “Guess what? Love wins.” His lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan, sported a shirt emblazoned with a knife and the words, “Protect Trans Kids.”
Walz’s progressive streak didn’t stop there. In May last year, he signed a bill mandating that boys’ bathrooms in public schools be stocked with free tampons and pads starting January 2024. The bill states, “The products must be available to all menstruating students in restrooms regularly used by students in grades 4 to 12 according to a plan developed by the school district.”
The Minnesota Department of Education has backed this agenda since 2017, encouraging schools to affirm a child’s new gender identity, even against parental wishes. Their toolkit on transgender students insists, “A supportive school will create an affirming and accepting environment for every student, including transgender and gender nonconforming students and the family’s non-acceptance should not override the schools’ responsibility.”
Walz has been a vocal supporter of left-wing gender ideology for years. Back in 2017, he celebrated Danica Roem, the first trans-identifying legislator elected to the Virginia House. Over the years, he has consistently voiced his support for “trans youth” on social media, stating, “Here in Minnesota, we stand with our trans youth against hateful laws and damaging rhetoric.”
