The Biden-Harris administration is granting U.S. citizenship to migrants at a breakneck pace, faster than we’ve seen in the last decade. Thousands of foreign nationals are now becoming U.S. citizens each week, and as The New York Times eagerly notes, these newly-minted citizens are gearing up to vote in the upcoming November elections.
Xiao Wang, CEO of Boundless Immigration, who himself is foreign-born, candidly shared with the NYT that this “surge in naturalization efficiency” isn’t just about clearing backlogs. No, it’s about something much bigger: potentially reshaping the electorate just months before a crucial election. Wang’s organization specializes in helping migrants navigate the naturalization process, and they’ve got some heavy hitters on their team, like former State Department Deputy Visa Chief Erik Finch. Wang boasts, “Every citizenship application could be a vote that decides Senate seats or even the presidency.”
So far, under the Biden-Harris administration, about 3.3 million foreigners have been naturalized. And guess where these new voting-age citizens are popping up? States like Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania—the same battlegrounds that are critical for both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in their election strategies.
The NYT goes on to highlight how these new citizens are getting processed in record time—less than six months—while back in the Trump administration, it took around ten months due to what they describe as “heightened scrutiny” and pandemic delays. A recent survey shows that an overwhelming 81.4 percent of these naturalized citizens plan to vote in 2024, with another 14.5 percent saying they “probably” will. And wouldn’t you know it? Naturalized Latino, African, and Asian migrants tend to lean heavily Democratic.
But it’s not just about those who’ve made it through the naturalization process. Even non-naturalized immigrants, both legal and illegal, could have an impact on the election, thanks to lax vetting procedures that have led to many registering to vote illegally.
When you consider illegal immigration alone, most Americans believe Biden and Harris have let it spiral out of control, thinking it will secure a “permanent majority” for the Democratic Party in the long run. Some projections suggest that by the end of their term, illegal immigration under Biden and Harris could rival the total legal immigration through Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954.
