Earlier, it was revealed that Kamala Harris was trying to engineer a viral, unscripted moment in her debate with former President Donald Trump. Now, if that sounds like a contradiction, that’s because it is. How exactly do you plan for something “unscripted”? But this sums up Harris perfectly—everything is calculated, rehearsed, and staged. Nothing about her is natural, even when it comes to something as minor as a handshake. The idea, of course, was to make her look bold or like she was confronting Trump. Instead, it came off as her being overly eager for a handshake, and frankly, it looked awkward.
Here’s a tip: when you have to walk over to someone, you’re basically admitting they’re in charge. So, that power play? Yeah, that fell flat on its face.
Throughout the debate, she resorted to rehearsed talking points, repeating them like a broken record while avoiding direct answers. Even Frank Luntz, who’s usually the master of political spin, had to call her out for dodging questions. When Luntz can’t defend you, you know it’s bad. At times, Harris seemed rattled, but luckily for her, the moderators were more than willing to lend a hand. They were clearly biased in her favor, making the whole debate feel anything but fair. In fact, it made the CNN debate seem like a model of impartiality. And let’s not forget the faces she kept making—those were something else. Definitely not the strong, composed look she was likely aiming for.
Trump, on the other hand, delivered a moment of pure comedy gold early on. It’s being said that Harris was trying to recreate her infamous “I’m speaking” moment from previous debates, but Trump beat her to the punch. As she tried to talk over him (despite her mic being muted), he dropped the very line she was probably hoping to use on him. That might have been the best moment of the night and certainly one of Trump’s funniest.
The irony, of course, is that while Harris was working so hard to manufacture a viral moment, Trump effortlessly stole it. She may have had the moderators in her corner, but when it comes to those authentic, memorable moments, Trump still knows how to steal the show without breaking a sweat.
