The liberal dream of a “blue wave” vanished in a haze, leaving progressives stunned as Donald Trump secured a second term. Despite Kamala Harris’s glaring shortcomings in both policy and political insight, her supporters clung to hope, holding up polls showing a tight race. But Election Night turned out to be a flashback to 2016, with Trump not only locking down the Electoral College but winning the popular vote too. This time, the Left can’t fall back on griping about the Electoral College—he took both.
It might finally be time for Democrats to face the reality that Trump isn’t just a fluke who stumbled his way into power. He’s leading a groundswell of working-class voters that completely dismantled Democratic hopes across the board. Republicans have reclaimed the White House, kept control of the House, and seized the Senate by flipping seven seats. This “red wave” wasn’t just the usual coalition; it was fueled by a broad base of blue-collar Americans from every background. Yet, pundits on the Left, like The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart, still can’t grasp why voters would side with Trump. Meanwhile, Juan Williams launched into a rant about January 6, and MSNBC’s Chris Hayes was quick to question the Electoral College again. As for Rachel Maddow, she seemed baffled by the idea that millions don’t see Biden’s economy as the “roaring success” she thinks it is.
To Maddow and company: sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. If tens of millions of people think the economy is in the gutter, it’s probably because it is. These progressive pundits seem incapable of understanding any reality beyond their own echo chamber.
On MSNBC, Joy Reid took her usual melodrama to new heights, predicting ethnic cleansing in Gaza and painting Florida as a proto-fascist state straight out of some Project 2025 dystopia. CNN’s Van Jones made a return to his “whitelash” commentary, lamenting how Black women were “devastated” by the election results while warning that Trump’s second term was somehow a threat to the entire planet. Reid’s outrage was predictable, but Capehart’s disbelief took the cake. Does he not realize that Bill Clinton, despite being credibly accused of serious misconduct, would likely still pull in votes if he were eligible for another term?
In the aftermath, the media’s collective meltdown was both theatrical and revealing, as they continue to overlook the reasons millions of Americans just don’t share their worldview. For now, the Democrats may have to come to terms with the fact that Trump’s support isn’t some temporary glitch; it’s the pulse of a movement that’s not going anywhere.
