A CBS News/YouGov poll published this week shows former President Donald Trump is making significant gains with black voters, with support at 23 percent — nearly double his support from 2020. This increase highlights a shifting political landscape and suggests that Trump’s message is resonating with more black Americans.
In the 2020 election, exit polling showed only 12 percent black voter support for Trump, which was already an improvement from 2016 when he received just eight percent. The latest poll indicates that Trump’s appeal has continued to grow, challenging the traditional Democratic stronghold on this crucial voter demographic.
Conversely, President Joe Biden is experiencing a noticeable decline in support among black voters. In 2020, exit polls reported that 87 percent of black voters supported Biden, according to CNN. However, the recent CBS News/YouGov poll shows this support has dropped to 75 percent, reflecting growing discontent with the current administration.
Politico Magazine recently interviewed several black men in Milwaukee, part of a voter advocacy group pilot program focused on increasing black male voting participation. The interviews revealed tepid support for Biden. When asked about Biden, barber Rome Simmons remarked, “Sleepy Joe? You see the way he shuffles around. Hell, I’d be sleepy, too.”
Lorenzo Davis, a barber and ambassador for the Black Men Vote program, expressed his intention to vote for Trump. “He’s about business,” Davis told Politico. “I agree with him that we should have more American-made products.” This sentiment underscores a broader trend of black voters appreciating Trump’s focus on economic and business issues.
Recognizing this shift, the Trump campaign launched a group earlier this month aimed at courting black voters. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to build on the momentum and increase support within the black community, highlighting Trump’s commitment to policies that promote business growth and American manufacturing. As the 2024 election approaches, these efforts could play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape.
