More Democrat donors are threatening to withhold their cash unless President Joe Biden steps aside for the 2024 race.
A group of Democrat donors, spearheaded by former Intuit and PayPal chief executive Bill Harris, has promised to donate $2 million for new debates— but only if Biden resigns.
“It’s not about avoiding chaos and drama,” Bill Harris told the Washington Post. “We need some drama and chaos. It could be refreshing and energizing.”
He hinted at a plan to ensure Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t automatically get the funds.
Harris, who donated $620,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in 2020, said Biden’s disastrous debate performance has turned many Democrat donors, including himself, against the president.
Harris recently launched a PAC called Democrats for the Next Generation. The pledged $2 million will fund “a series of debates among prominent candidates to become the Democratic nominee for president if Biden steps aside.”
Harris slammed Biden’s inner circle for claiming that regular Americans weren’t affected by Biden’s poor debate performance.
“It’s the opposite,” he said. “Voters have been there for a long time, and it’s the Democratic establishment and the Beltway community that’s been slow and reluctant to face reality.”
Meanwhile, another major donor is pushing the 81-year-old president to bow out.
Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings said Biden is in denial about his mental state.
“He needs to step aside to let a vigorous Democratic leader beat Trump,” Hastings said.
Another longtime Democrat donor, Whitney Tilson, said he’s keeping his checkbook closed for now.
“I want to hold onto my donations and support my favorites among the candidates who throw their hat in the ring,” Tilson said.
Each donor expressed doubts about Biden making it to November, predicting he will inevitably drop out of the race.
