The House just passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on Wednesday, a bill demanding proof of citizenship to register to vote. Finally, some common sense, right? But hold your applause, because almost all Democrats were against it.
Surprisingly, five Democrats joined the Republicans to get the bill through with 221 votes. Kudos to Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), Jared Golden (D-ME), Don Davis (D-NC), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) for breaking ranks. Yet, 198 Democrats couldn’t bring themselves to support it.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) didn’t mince words. “Today, 198 House Democrats voted against preventing illegal aliens from voting in American elections,” he said. Johnson pointed out the obvious—Joe Biden has opened the floodgates for millions of illegals, and now the Dems are happy to let them just check a box and vote in federal elections.
“We have long known this was an intentional effort to turn them into voters, and now the American people know where every member of Congress stands on this critically important issue,” he added. Clearly, the Democrats want to turn this into a free-for-all where non-citizens can sway our elections.
Johnson’s report last month supporting the SAVE Act made it clear: the current laws aren’t cutting it. “We have so many non-citizens in the country right now that if only one out of 100 of those illegal aliens voted, you’re talking about hundreds of thousands of votes being cast,” Johnson said on the House floor.
But don’t get too excited—the measure heads to the Senate next, where it’s likely to hit a wall. And even if it somehow made it through, the White House has already thrown up a roadblock. So, it’s back to the same old struggle for election integrity.
