The Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), one of the biggest censorship juggernauts out there, has finally met its demise. And who do we have to thank for this? None other than Elon Musk, who put the final nail in their coffin with a lawsuit.
Now, let’s put this in context: GARM has been a menace to conservative and free speech platforms like Rumble and X/Twitter, draining billions of dollars in revenue by driving advertisers away from anything they deemed “unsafe.” They’ve been a key player in the left-wing censorship machine, and frankly, it’s a relief to see them go. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
But before we get too excited, let’s be real. The swamp, or “the blob” as some like to call it, never really loses. Sure, you cut off one head, but another pops up somewhere else, probably even more insidious. It’s like firing James Comey from the FBI; he waltzes off with millions, and we end up with Christopher Wray, who looks like he’s neck-deep in a conspiracy to keep Trump out of office, even if it means lying under oath. The swamp adapts and survives—so far, at least.
GARM was born in 2019 under the banner of the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), supposedly to ensure “safety standards” on social media platforms. In reality, it was about silencing voices they didn’t like. X’s lawsuit called them out for organizing an advertiser boycott against Twitter, which they absolutely did.
The left-leaning Verge, predictably, paints Musk’s lawsuit as some kind of revenge act, portraying him as the villain for standing up to this censorship cartel. That’s rich. GARM’s whole mission was to silence anyone who didn’t parrot their left-wing narratives and to choke off the lifeblood of conservative media—revenue.
And then there’s Musk, who’s not exactly known for mincing words. When advertisers tried to pressure him, he famously told them to take a hike, and that’s putting it mildly. “Go f*** yourself,” he said, twice for emphasis. That’s the kind of pushback GARM never saw coming.
Let’s not kid ourselves, though. This is just one battle in a much larger war. The same forces that created GARM will pop up somewhere else, under a different name, with the same goal: to silence conservative voices. They’ve already shown they have no problem with platforms like the Huffington Post or Facebook, which turns a blind eye to illegal activities, or TikTok, which is a breeding ground for mental health crises among teens.
So while it’s satisfying to see GARM go down, the fight is far from over. The blob is still out there, ready to inflate in some other corner. The only option we have is to keep fighting it, wherever it rears its ugly head.
