Donald Trump has hinted that he’s open to bringing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. into his administration if he clinches a second term. This comes after Kennedy, a lifelong Democrat, reportedly reached out to Vice President Kamala Harris’ team, hoping to strike a deal: he’d drop out of the race and endorse her in exchange for a cabinet position. Unsurprisingly, Harris’ camp wasn’t interested in entertaining the offer, and Kennedy, clearly miffed, lashed out at both Harris and the Democratic Party.
Trump, never one to miss an opportunity, told CNN that he’s long admired RFK Jr. and would welcome his support. “He’s a brilliant guy. He’s very smart, and I’ve known him for a long time,” Trump commented. The fact that Kennedy is even thinking of getting out of the race seems to be news to Trump, but he’s ready to embrace the idea, saying he’d be “honored” by Kennedy’s endorsement and would consider giving him a role in his administration.
Trump’s warm words for Kennedy are particularly intriguing given the latter’s recent attacks on his own party. Kennedy hasn’t held back on X, where he criticized Harris and Democrats for their double standards. Highlighting their hypocrisy on issues like censorship and vaccine mandates, Kennedy’s barbs sound more aligned with GOP talking points than those of his lifelong party.
While it’s not every day that a Democrat flirts with the idea of joining a Republican administration, Trump seems more than willing to play along. Whether Kennedy actually takes Trump up on the offer remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: this election season continues to blur the lines between party loyalty and personal ambition.
