Vice President Kamala Harris found herself back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons on Sunday, as she delivered yet another rambling commentary on democracy, offering critics a fresh opportunity to question her communication skills. Harris was on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania, a critical swing state, alongside her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as part of their multi-city bus tour.
During her speech, Harris attempted to wax poetic about the nature of democracy but instead left many scratching their heads. “Our election is about understanding the importance of this beautiful country of ours in terms of what we stand for around the globe as a democracy,” she began, setting the stage for what quickly devolved into one of her signature word salads. “As a democracy,” she repeated, before diving into a convoluted explanation: “We know there’s a duality to the nature of democracy. On the one hand, incredible strength when it is intact. What it does for its people to protect and defend their rights, their liberty, and their freedom. Incredibly strong and incredibly fragile.”
Predictably, social media lit up with reactions to Harris’s latest verbal stumble. Conservative commentators and political pundits wasted no time in dissecting her remarks. Greg Price, a conservative digital strategist, quipped, “Kamala word salads are so back,” capturing the sentiment of many who have followed Harris’s public speaking mishaps. The “End Wokeness” account chimed in, pointing out, “This is why they don’t let Kamala speak without a script. Yikes.”
Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL) joined the chorus, bluntly asking, “What does this even mean?” while radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt didn’t hold back, stating, “Kamala Harris was, is and will always be terrible on the stump.” The mocking didn’t stop there; social media user Collin Rugg remarked, “Not a good look when everyone on X is calling you a drunk,” adding to the growing list of critiques. Even the Trump War Room couldn’t resist getting in on the action, sarcastically commenting, “Kamala Harris serves up a fresh word salad as she describes the ‘duality to the nature of democracy.’”
This latest episode adds to a growing collection of Harris’s public speaking blunders, which have become fodder for memes and social media ridicule. Her previous awkward moments, including the infamous “unburdened by what has been” and “coconut tree” remarks, continue to haunt her, despite attempts to embrace and rebrand these missteps with a self-proclaimed “brat” persona.
As the 2024 campaign season heats up, Harris’s gaffes aren’t doing her any favors, especially when juxtaposed with her opponent, former President Donald Trump, whose campaign team gleefully highlighted yet another clip of what they dubbed “Kamala ‘Cringe’ Harris.” In that video, Harris awkwardly attempts to rally a high school football team by assuring them, “you will be undefeated — even if you don’t win every game,” a line that left many more confused than inspired.
