Built and managed by the United States in the early 20th century, the canal was handed over to Panama in 1999 under a treaty brokered by President Jimmy Carter. Trump has labeled this transfer one of the worst deals in American history and believes the canal’s strategic and economic value justifies bringing it back under U.S. control. For Trump, undoing what he views as past diplomatic blunders is central to his broader vision of restoring American dominance.
